New fixed-term contract not what they see

Dear Colleagues,

All staff at Deakin deserve a secure, well-paid job. When our Vice Chancellor, Ian Martin, announced the intention to decasualise our workforce in 2025, we were excited for a future where teaching expertise was rewarded with the security that comes with more secure stable employment.

Unfortunately, Deakin University management has taken a very different path. As you may be aware, many staff have been engaged on short-term contracts that cut pay and increase workloads. Our Enterprise Agreement is meant to prevent contract misuse, yet in our view Deakin is undermining these protections.

The NTEU is taking action to preserve your pay and job security in line with your rights under the enterprise agreement—but we can only do it with your support.

Is this happening to you?

You’re not alone if you have:

  • Been offered a 16-week contract or one lasting less than a year
  • Been downgraded to Level A1, resulting in an effective pay cut of hundreds of dollars a week
  • Been forced into an unsustainable 90% teaching allocation

Get in touch,
