RMIT Training Bargaining Update

Subject: RMIT Training Bargaining Update
Date: October 2nd 2023

Dear colleague,

As you know the wages and conditions offered in RMIT Training Management’s Enterprise Agreement was voted down by all Training staff in a legal ballot.

You said very clearly that the offer would have locked you into another three years of wages that does not reflect your sector peers’, superannuation well below other RMIT employees, as well as poor redundancy provisions and poor opportunities for re-classification.

You stood strong, understood what the offer was, and made a decision that forced RMIT Training to re-think. Staff at RMIT Training used their voice to register their rejection of Management’s offer.

Since then NTEU has returned to the bargaining table with Training management. NTEU has asked that:

  • a 2.5% administrative pay increase be made to all staff NOW - as part of the 5% pay increase offered for year 1 of the agreement.
  • The Superannuation offer be reviewed so that a stepped increase of 2% be made every year of the Agreement (moving towards 17% over the life of an Agreement)
  • Bargaining continue around future pay increases after year 1 and other conditions such as redundancy and classification movement be decided.

None of these requests were accepted.

In spite of this, your very clear message to Training management about how the current offer is below your sector peers’, below cost of living, and does not recognise the three years of no wage increases, RMIT Training’s offer has not changed

Training staff are now being asked by management to re-accept this inferior offer with no change or accept no wage increase until 2024!

NTEU believe this is an insult to staff.

RMIT Training are threatening a 'take it or get nothing” offer.

This shows no respect for you as a professional or the years of hard work (through good times and bad) where you have shown support and kept RMIT Training open - even when you did not know if you would have work yourself.

NTEU believes that RMIT Training senior management are using you - the lowest paid staff at RMIT- to ensure a quick return to profit of this entity and the RMIT group.

NTEU wants all staff at RMIT Training to be treated as equals and to have:

  • Real wage increases that match inflation (15% increase over three years).
  • Paid personal (sick/carers) leave of 15 days per year.
  • Superannuation that is moving towards the same as other RMIT employees.
  • Classification structures that better recognise your experience/skills.
  • Improved redundancy and redeployment to other parts of RMIT.
  • Improvements in First People’s employment.

This “take it or get nothing” approach by RMIT Training management will leave you worse off over the next three years - don’t make that mistake.

NTEU is standing with you.

This week NTEU is taking industrial action in rejection of this insulting approach to Training staff.

We will continue to keep you updated.
