Want better pay and working conditions? Vote No to Deakin’s proposed ‘agreement’.
For the last seven months, the union representing Deakin staff, the National Tertiary Education Union, has been bargaining for a new enterprise agreement with Deakin management to deliver fair pay rises and protect and improve your working conditions.
This morning, Deakin University management walked away from the bargaining table and instead communicated their intention to put a proposed ‘Agreement’ to staff to vote on. This draft has NOT been agreed by your Union because it is NOT a good deal:
Your pay will go backwards in real terms with Deakin’s offer. You deserve a better deal. Deakin’s offer is 2.85% per annum to the expiry of their proposed ‘agreement’. Where we have negotiated deals, we have secured higher pay rises, and we expect the same at Deakin.
So Vote No, and get Deakin management back to the bargaining table.
What other Universities have agreed to through negotiation:
We strongly encourage staff to Vote No on management’s proposed agreement.

Watch: Why you should vote "No"
Management has said ‘No’ to all staff’s major claims and has instead outlined a draft ‘agreement’ with a low pay offer spread over 6 years (below inflation and below other Universities) and other changes which put your existing working conditions at risk.
Our vision for a better Deakin includes:
1. Improved Academic Workload Models that empower staff to have a say and a return to a 40/40/20 baseline.
2. Creating at least 150 extra permanent positions for current casual staff by 2024.
3. Codifying the right for professional staff to work from home where practical.
4. Ensuring a fair pay rise for all staff and maintain parity with industry standards.
76% of Deakin NTEU Members recently voted to take legally Protected Industrial Action to support these objectives. This is a normal part of bargaining, but management has decided to stop bargaining altogether and put their preferred draft out to a vote instead.
Vote NO to send a clear message to management: they should come back to the bargaining table and negotiate a new agreement with the NTEU. We deserve good working conditions, not this second-rate deal.
Make sure you read all the Union’s information carefully to understand exactly what management’s proposed deal really means. Attend the union’s information meetings (links above) and bring your colleagues.
We will provide an analysis of the management's proposed deal, our full log of claims and draft clauses, on our website in the coming days: https://www.nteu-deakin.org/bargaining/
We want you to tell us what matters to you. Complete this two-minute survey, and please share this email with your colleagues.
