Dear Monash University staff,
About that article in The Age…
As you may be aware from recent reporting in The Age, university management has applied to the Fair Work Commission to retrospectively vary the Enterprise Agreement which regulates your employment conditions.
If Monash succeeds in its variation, millions of dollars of backpay owed to casual Teaching Associates for unpaid consultation hours, which the NTEU is seeking to recoup in court, could be wiped out.
Teaching Associates who currently do get paid for scheduled consultation could be subject to an effective wage cut.
More information on the variation application, how it could affect you, and how you can stop the university’s “unusual legal tactics” is available on our website here: https://nteu.au/monashconsults.
An information and Q&A session is also taking place this Wednesday (19 April) at 12:00pm, which you can register for here. If you have any questions, feel free to email monashconsults@PROTECTED.
Industrial action
Negotiations for a new Enterprise Agreement (ie, to replace the one that Monash is trying to vary) have been underway for 6 months, with little or no progress on things like workloads, job security, or working hours.
As of 9.00am this morning, NTEU members will be commencing protected industrial action in pursuit of our claims in the new Enterprise Agreement, which include:
80% ongoing work
Improved leave provisions
All hours paid for all hours worked for casual staff
Flexible work arrangements and the right to work from home
Fair and reasonable workloads
A pay-rise of 15% or CPI + 1.5% (whichever is greater) The industrial action will include a range of bans on certain activities and making statements in support of the Union’s claims. This may increase to strike action if no agreement is reached soon.
You can read more about NTEU’s claims, the progress of enterprise negotiations and what protected industrial action is on our bargaining website here, or get in touch with the Branch at monash@PROTECTED.
In union,
NTEU Monash Branch
